My investigation on fabrics is divided into two separate parts, online research, and going to a fabric store to explore. After researching several fabric stores, I came to the conclusion that “Diteks Tekstil” and “Gurtoplar,” would be a good choice. However, before going their I wanted to gain prior knowledge on common defects, physical properties and characteristics, as well as, the application of fabrics. This article published on the source, Textile School, has a separation of information which divides the general topic of, “fabric” into subtopics. I was able to understand the basics of fabrics such as some essential common terms (Bi-directional Fabric, break factor, colour flag etc.). I was able to have basic understanding which would help me in my meeting with Diteks Tekstil, and Gurtoplar. After investigating and analysing the information published on the website, I concluded that the fabrics I would consider are: Velour, cotton, silk, acetate and qiviut fibers.
After calling Diteks and arranging an appropriate time to meet, I went to the store to evaluate possible fabric choices, and indicate the ones I am planning to employ. It was very helpful for my project because going to the actual store gave me the means to assess the quality and texture of the fabrics, which I wouldn’t have had by searching only online websites. Even though, I found appropriate fabrics, and formed fine relationships with the people at Diteks, I strongly felt that I had to see a wider range of places. Therefore, I researched other Fabric stores, and found that Gurtoplar, has an exceptional range of fabric types. An investigation can not be done at an excellent level, if two or more distinct sources on the same topic, are not compared, for this reason examining two very good stores assisted me to make the best decision on which one was more appropriate for this project. After collecting samples and price ranges, I did not pick one specific store, instead I decided to work with both of them for diverse types of fabric.
Origin:
Diteks Tekstil, is a textile company in Nisantasi. It was opened 30 years ago, and has grown to become the leading fabric store in Turkey as they merchandise and distribute fabrics to garment stores. The superiority of Diteks, has a negative effect for me which is, the relatively high price points, compared to the average valuation.
Gurtoplar which was opened in 1959, provides an extensive reach of fabrics, at more economical prices. The limitation here emerges with my goal for this personal project because I want to create a clothing collection which allows women to follow trends in an unparalleled and authentic way, which liberates them from what we see being produced in the mass markets. It should be implementing a twist to the dominant culture of street style. I want to continue following my core values and missions, however the fabrics presented at Gurtoplar are not fads, they are mostly outdated.
Purpose:
The purpose of Diteks is to form strong bonds with a range of consistent stores, and to merchandise trendy fabrics for distribution. The reason I attended this specific fabric store, was because it specialises in suede fabrics which I am thinking on using in my collection. The reason I chose Gurtoplar, was because of its wide range of fabrics, in appropriate prices which I could tackle.
Value:
Both stores are valuable and significant sources, because doing an investigation on fabrics by physically going to the stores, makes them a primary source. It holds extensive advantages and has a crucial effect on the success of my collection. I gained extra knowledge and had a better understanding of what I wanted to do, and how I could change my concept designs.
Limitation:
The limitation to these sources is that they are not places I can go whenever I want to. Since it is not easily in reach, I am not able to go to the store, at any time I require clarification on something. Moreover, it is difficult to purchase from such companies, because they are not familiar with selling limited amounts of fabric (such as 12 meters per type).
